Welcome to today's professional development session on "flipping the class!"

Below is a brief intro video (also a sample screencast...)


What is a "flipped class?" First, it is not (I repeat NOT) simply having students watch Khan Academy videos at school. Since that is out of the way, the following links provide great overviews of the flipped class model. The first is a brief infographic that outlines the origins and basics of the flipped model. The second is a more in-depth (and excellent) Prezi about the flipped classroom.

Getting Started

Today, we will be using screencast-o-matic to make our initial videos. There are many advantages to this site. First, it is free. That is awesome. Second, it is relatively simple. Also awesome. However, if you are considering flipping your classroom on a large scale (all-in), I would suggest Camtasia Studio as well as quality audio and webcam devices. If interested, let me know and I will provide some guidance regarding what has worked for me and many other educators applying the flipped class model.


  1. Go to http://screencast-o-matic.com/.
  2. Click "Watch a very quick demo" on the left. (You may need to update your Java plugin...) The video goes pretty quickly. Don't worry, you can always go back to review part of it or ask me for assistance.
  3. Click "login" located in the top right.
  4. Register by entering your email and a password (twice). In the future, you will simply login with this information on the left side of the screen.
  5. Open any file or website that you would like to screencast (ex. PowerPoint notes, Word Document...) If you do not have a specific file or website available, go to a website of interest that you wouldn't mind discussing for a few minutes.
  6. Once your document is open or site is available, click "Start Recording" on the left of the page.
  7. Drag the recording area (inside dotted line) to the appropriate size, or choose one of the preset sizes such as "fullscreen."
  8. Make sure there is audio detected and that your mic volume is correct.
  9. If using a webcam, make sure that it is turned on and that you click "integrated webcam" in the SOM menu.
  10. Click the red circle button to start recording.
  11. Click done when you are finished.
  12. You can preview your video before deciding whether or not to save by clicking the green play button (bottom right).
  13. Click "Publish to Screencast-o-Matic." (You can also publish to YouTube or save the file, but for now lets use this option.)
  14. Create a Title and description, then scroll down and click "Upload to SOM."
  15. A link will be provided for you and your students to access the video you just created.

Where to begin... here are a few website that are a great place to start.

Flipped Learning
This site is a great resource for all things "flipped class." It is created by Jon Bergman, one of the flipclass founders.

The Flipped Class Network
This is a great network of teachers who are using, or interested in the model.

This is a website that I have started for social studies teachers interested in the flip. It will soon include contributors from several states who will share their flipped class experiences. It also has links to various flipped class resources and teacher blogs.

Twitter, Yes Twitter
If you are currently scoffing in condescension, please reconsider your preconvieved notion of Twitter. This has been an extremely valuable resource for me to connect with other educators and explore these ideas. Follow the #flipclass conversation, especially on Monday nights at 8pm when there is a "flipclass chat." If you are interested in the model, this is a great way to connect with educators are enthusiastic about this promising model of education.
